Steering Committee Meeting Minutes – September 2014

We agreed to hold our monthly conference calls on the third Wednesday of each month from 3:00 to 4:00 Eastern time (noon to 1:00 pm Pacific).

We agreed that Marlene, as immediate past FACT chair, will be a member of the Steering Committee.

John reported on his conversations with Joe Wheeler.  We agreed to coordinate the work of our two groups.  Joe offered to pursue IJIS affiliate status for us.  John will explore with Kevin Bowling, who serves as a “liaison” from NACM to IJIS, what the nature of his role is and whether, in his view, it would make sense for us to pursue affiliate status for NACM or FACT with IJIS (which would enable us to participate in IJIS committee work without becoming IJIS members).

We began a serious discussion of how FACT actually fulfills its mission of serving as the “link” between the court administration and vendor communities.  All seem to agree that FACT’s historical raison d’etre is no longer relevant, because the courts to a very great extent have their own technological support.

Different members advocated:

  • FACT identifying needs for deliverables and producing them
  • FACT focusing on its communications mission, summarizing what is going on in the court and justice technology worlds for all three of our constituencies – court administrators, court IT staff, and vendors
  • FACT keeping courts people informed of developments in the larger justice community
  • FACT focusing not just on IT but also on other technologies such as video

John will arrange an opportunity for the Steering Committee to have a face-to-face meeting in Las Vegas in conjunction with the E-Courts conference in December to address these issues in conjunction with a review of our governance document, the NACM/FACT MOU, and our strategic plan.
